I have seen the same thing in my area but it is not across all model ranges. Economy cars and the small SUV's have gained but I have not seen full size pickups and SUV's make any gains. I haven't seen Volvos gain much around here.

A sponsored article to try to justify the unwarranted high prices. People will pay only what is reasonable to them.

That's not true AT ALL
This is the current state of the used car market.
What I have to pay for say an 07XC TODAY with low miles (under 35K) is the SAME number I paid exactly TWO YEARS AGO for one.
Makes no sense but it's called supply and demand.
If other dealers will pay it, then I have to pay it if I want to own a certain car.

2007 V70Rs with under 43000 miles sell WHOLESALE for (or over) $22,000
That same 07 V70R I could have bought two years ago for $19,000

You can rationlize and make comments all you want to but this is the now current state of the used car market and it will get worse as less new cars are being sold and coming up shortly will be a HUGE shortage of many cars because of the Japanese earthquake
BTW did you bother to read this comment in that article?

Anything clean brings in a lot of money, but there's not too many out there," said Marty Lookingbill, owner of Gettysburg Auto Auction. "The price(s) of clean, low-mileage cars are through the roof. When people trade in their cars today, they are trading it in because they have to."

This was not a paid ad, it was an interview to several people

I believe it! I've seen it firsthand. I couldn't believe a clean CPO 2008 S80 T6 AWD w/premium sound and keyless and 38K on the clock was still $26K black book ($28.5K blue book)--and plain ol' 3.2s weren't much cheaper. Luckily my dealer didn't pay too close attention to the features of the one they sold me and I paid $25.5K for mine. Depreciation on clean certifiable cars cars definitely seems to be less than what it was even three years ago.

I've been looking to unload one of my Jeeps and pick up something small and efficient. For what I'm seeing out there, I'm better off buying new than used...that's how high the prices are on the smaller cars. Same thing happened four years ago when gas went high.

Nobody has anything small in stock right now, at least around here. Fiestas, etc. We looked at getting a Fiat 500, but its TOO small for us. As much as I hate buying a Japanese car, I may end up getting a Nissan Versa since I can't get a Fiesta anywhere.

I rented one and didn't care for it at all, I rented a Ford Focus and thought it handled much better seemed a bit bigger.

For the smaller cars/mid-size class, it is definitely true. I've been looking at smaller cars too; even for a 6-yr old Honda, they still go for almost $11K for a car that was originally only 17-18 to start with! Accords are the same way, but I don't need a car that big.

Looking at it, my payments would only be about $40-50/month more on a brand-new $18K car.

The new Focus is a very nice car - and has more power under the hood than most of its competition. The Chevy Cruze is nice too - huge improvement over the Cobalt, and comes with all kinds of standard features on the base model (except cruise control isn't an option?). I'm not a fan of the new Mazda 3 or 2011 Civic. I've yet to drive the 2012.

Decisions, decisions...
