I found the Uhaul site pretty informative and they will tell you the type of hitch you need and the maximum tow. They even sell the kits for the wiring. IT may be worthwhile to have a conversation with them in person to get information about what you are trying to accomplish.

They also install them. The V70 I have has one of theirs installed by the the previous owner, the type who i believe is made by a name brand manufacturer.

Have you thought of getting one of those roof mount boxes for the top of the car itself to help transport the wife's shoes? ;)

I have a the roof rack but those roof pods cost a small fortune. It claims its only good for 100Kg and I don't like the idea of all the weight mounted so high up. I don't expect to be rallying around corners but I get nervous just thinking about that weight so high up.

I did speak with a U-Haul agent and they didn't tell me anything that the website didn't mention.

When I get everything sorted I'll post a thread on my progress. MY biggest fear is breaking down because of the extra engine load. Are there any tips for towing that I should know?

Keep the revs up. Your transmission should do fine with that; mine's pretty smart when it gets to a hill. The Jeep...isn't and I had to keep overdrive turned off once I got into the mountains or I'd start losing lots of speed before the thing would downshift. Still, you may want to keep it in sport mode. This way you will be dropping a gear for more power and slipping the torque converter less and not overheating the transmission when accelerating.
An external cooler would be a great idea especially if you're doing the move this summer into Texas. I've looked at some for my own car under $100.

Load the majority of the weight in the trailer towards the front. Brake waaaaayyyy ahead. Accelerate smoothly and gently. It's basically going to be pulling twice it's weight.

Do you have any details on the transmission cooler? $100 sounds like a bargain.

you can now buy these roof pods which are made out of almost the same material as hockey bags. They basically strap down on the car roof (just put some padding to keep it from scratching). I have seen them for about 60 bucks.

If that fails take some hockey bags and load them up.. ive seen them for 30 bucks each. Can also be used for disposal of bodies... LOL

I was looking at the first one on the page here:

http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/Automa ... perCoolers

I think it would mount under my bumper in front of the radiator. Or in front of the front Volvo grille.

Someone else on the site here recently used a Mocal cooler:

Have you looked at uShip? It matches truckers going between cities that will carry your stuff along with their regular load. You post what you have and its weight, and truckers/individuals going that way bid on the load. Everything from motorcycles to boxes to horses.

If you can palletize your boxes you can get a lower rate and more offers. A single pallet can go cross-country for a few hundred dollars.

Tongue weight varies between 110 and 265 lbs depending on the hitch class and trailer weight.
old on your telling me I can only tow 200Ibs? The trailer is 900Ibs which leaves 200Ibs?

I have 900Ibs in books and maybe 400Ibs in clothes and electronics. I imagine my load will be 1600Ibl in a trailer with no brakes.

Is that really a problem? I have one week to the move and the U-Haul told me I could pull 3,500Ibs. What gives here?

you can tow 1600 lbs no problem, I haul two ATV's one is about 450lbs and the other is 700lbs so that's 1150lbs then another 400 fir the trailer so 1550lbs about and it does it with ease for the most part. just load the trailer with the heavy stuff in the trailer axle's and not all in the front, the back ends on these cars do sag.
