As I shifted from third to fourth today on my way to work the shift lever popped loose. The trans is stuck in third or fourth and the shift lever will only move front to back between third and fourth. I popped the cover off and looked around but I can't see much without removing the ball assembly and shift knob. It appears that most of the shifter mechanism and linkage is plastic - is this a common failure? The car has 109k miles. Any tips from the experts?
Thanks in advance

Common?
So So. Some have, some haven't. If you have an 04, you need to buy the upgraded cables
I had one pop loose and I was dead in the water (I was under warranty at the time)
The Volvo tech made up a couple of small clips tapped into the case and bolted them to the tranny
Never a failure since
Oh they come off under the hood too
