Tune up

Post by weo457 »

I just purchased a 1999 S70. I was told by the previous owner that it did not need a tune up until 100K. True or not True and when should it be performed? He said he had never done one before.

How many miles on your car?

The first "tune-up" at 100K miles? That's insane. Of course, you have to ask yourself, "what's a tune-up?" To me, it's following all routine maintenance. For most people it's changing out the spark plugs (use Bosch or Volvo copper plugs- stay way from the platinums), and possibly the ignition wires and rotor, air filter and cabin filter. Timing, etc. and valve clearance is set automatically so these don't need to be done. I would do all of what I mentioned and then some. If the transmission fluid has never been changed, flush it per instructions here on this site...will take you at least 12 quarts of ATF. Go all synthetic Mobil-1 ATF if you have absolutely no leaks from the engine. Next, a filter and oil change (also Mobil-1...see owner's manual for best weight). Also, most important of all, has the timing belt been done. If not, do it immediately...don't wait. If it breaks you'll be buying a new engine. If you have a turbo engine check your intercooler pipes and change any hoses that are bad. Even if you con't have a turbo, check and clean/replace any of the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) breather hoses. I guess that's about it. Buy most of your parts/supplies from www.fcpgroton.com as they are consistently the cheapest, fast and most reliable I've found.

By the time you get to 100k miles on a '99 S70, you should be on your 4th set of spark plugs and air filter, for instance.
