I'm sure this is in a post somewhere...but I"m not hitting it.

A breakdown of viscous gen 1 vs gen 2, 3 ect...

Thanks JRL, always quick to answer!

I was unsure of the switch from VC to hydraulic as I try to help a friend buy a XC.

I"m pretty sure from other threads that Volvo picked up the Gen 3 and Gen 4 at some point, just not sure which years for sure!

2002 haldex in S60 only. 2003 for the rest.
VC is completely different and rear diff nor VC is interchangeable from 2000 down and 2001-2002.
Haldex has some significant differences through its run. Newest version that started in 2009 (maybe 2008.5 for P3) no longer has mechanical pump, uses total electric pump for clutch apply.
Two versions of angle gear. Diagonal case sealed with liquid sealants and the "box" case with o ring sealed removable pinion and side covers. In other words, "leave well enough alone" is not a term describing AWD hardware on Volvos.
This is a macro look at this, there are more running changes than listed affecting interchangeability of pieces.
