Hi All,
Coming into Boston yesterday started getting flashing yellow arrow and check engine light. W (winter) setting on shift flashing yellow. So transmission. I added fluid and yellow light stopped but started this AM. Was driving it slow this AM..
Classic question: how do I know whether I simply need a 1) tranny fluid flush out, 2) a new sel switch or 3) new transmission (automatic answer any shop will give me). Any advise would be helpful. She has 164k, not sure of history as bought it at 151k. Also, any reputable Volvo specialists on the north shore ? T H X

Check the fluid first - hot mark, after 10 min of driving and with the engine idling in park. If it's dirty or not at the correct level, that's your first course of action.
If the fluid appears to be fine, try rowing the shifter between P and L 20 times quickly, then see if the arrow goes away. If that works for the time being, you'll need to clean/replace the PNP switch. See the repair database entries on that.
If you have no luck with either of those, you'll have to go to a Volvo dealer and have the codes read; then let us know what you find. This was my saga with the blinking arrow of doom: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=38920

You'll find that jblackburn really knows his stuff. Another thing you can do to help figure out what is going on is to try to find out what codes you're getting. When mine did it the cause was the TPS. Easy fix and the arrow has yet to come back.

I don't think an over the counter scanner will read trans codes. Also, do your back up lights work? If not then this also points to a dirty PNP switch.
