Howard, thanks for the update.

Software upgrade: did you take it to the dealer or indie mechanic? Which?
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link

I emailed my Indie on this service but they never got back to me so I took it to the dealer.

I had a quote for $125-$150 from other dealers. On my invoice, it is 1/2 hour labor + $22 for the software on my invoice. So quiz them if they want to charge you more.

But my dealer may have misquoted because the mechanic said there might be a chance the software download would require an adaptation test driver procedure (a sequence of drive cycles to program the transmission to shift properly). This would have cost $135 based on 1.5 hours @ $90/hr. My dealer was going to forego this since they didn't quote properly before start of work. Turns out unnecessary anyways.

The TCM upgrade part number on my invoice is 30677036. Not sure this number would contain version info for those wondering if they have the latest.

Whoops, I wasn't clear on the "which." I meant which dealer...

I stand corrected on my earlier comment about the trans flush effectiveness. Had the flush performed at the dealer ($C209, ouch) and the pause is almost completely gone when going from N to D. Service advisor claims that the flush has worked more often than not and that the valve body usually took care of the problem if the flush didn't. Interesting comment Howard about the valve body only lasting a year before the whole trans is replaced.

They also replaced worn inner tie rod ends for another $C514, bigger ouch which is the earliest front end work at 90K km (55K mi) that I have ever done on any car before.

I called Ravenna Volvo and they quoted me $125. I called Barrier and they told me $85. Barrier has been very good service wise for me. While I do most of the maint work, when I've broughted in to them for warranty work, they've been great (ETM, fan, door rubber seal).

This TCM upgrade was my own out of pocket and they also provide great service. Willing to eat the cost of tranny adaption due to their oversight (The background is that I brought the car in at 11am Saturday after learning they could do it right away. I was hauling my kids there for a 1/2 hour quick stop) As I reported, this was ultimately unnecessary.

When I had the door seal done while under 50k warranty (front, rear passenger door) Barrier did it promptly while another Volvo dealer in Portland tried some glue which ultimately didn't work.

On service I can't do myself or at an indie. I'm sold on Barrier Volvo's service.

Hope this answers your question.

Glad this worked for you. I heard dealer ATF is $65/gallon so more than 1/2-2/3 of the cost of your flush is 2 gallon's of the Volvo ATF.

You might research Duragard ATF protectant and see if you want to put it in. I was amazed by the unverisal approval from auto service professionals.

Sure does, thanks. I've found both Barrier and Ravena service depts. to be friendly and helpful for small things like parts, tips, reading codes etc. Never had to have any medium-major work done.

After having various shift problems in my AW55 tranny. I opted to use Mobil 3309. A bunch of problems went away and everything is back to normal. Here is a list of problems that was present with Amsoil and gone with Mobil 3309

- P-R hard engagement
- rare lengthy 2-3 flare when tranny is cold + manual shift mode (geartronic)
- random hard down shifts in manual shift mode

Anyways, lesson for me is: stick with Mobil 3309 for AW55.
