Extended Warranty in the UK?
Extended Warranty in the UK?
Hi, I've recently taken my Volvo V70 2001 Torslanda to the local dealership to have the typical symptoms mentioned here checked out.. stalling, overidling etc. Diagnostics (

Thanks Bud, will definitely try that tactic! Has anyone tried these guys? 2 year warranty sounds good but I'd be interested to understand if it's a relaible solution.. suspect all they do is change or recoat the pots? the following link descibes:Bud wrote:Check the news link at www.VEXEDvolvo.com

even selling on Ebay which is a good indication as to how wide this particular company must feel the POTential market is

I suspect this will not be new news to you guys but please bear in mind that I only found out about all this yesterday so I'm on a bit of a mission to understand the options for recourse and ultimately, get my car back on the road without Volvo ripping the %&^* out of me!
Btw I cleaned the ETM last night with no luck I'm afraid
many thanks again, Gary

changed the air filter today with no effect (it was dirty)... however, tried driving with the MAF sensor disconnected and it drives far better during normal conditions, never going in to limp home mode!.. the only time it does is when I put the throttle to the floor to have it go in to kick down mode (tried this twice and both occasions went in to limp home mode).
Soooooooo, I'm now confused, do I believe the VADIS diags (reports brake pedal and ETM problems) or bring the MAF in to play.. maybe by disconnecting the MAF sensor it's just running richer and masking the root cause of the problem (the ETM).. advice would be very welcome please..
again, very sorry if I am covering old ground here.. I'll have another look at the Vexed link to.

G-a-r-y,tried driving with the MAF sensor disconnected and it drives far better during normal conditions, never going in to limp home mode!..
That's very interesting. (1) I thought the substitute value for the disconnected MAF was derived from the ETM 's TPS output. (2) The prevailing failure mode for the ETM is bad TPS output . If both of those assumptions are correct, why would it drive better in the disconnected state if the ETM is failing?
Larry, I'm not knowledgeable enough on the workings of the car to comment to be honest but I understand your logic... all I can say is that with the MAF connected, the car goes in to limp home mode at the drop of a hat, without it, I can drive (so far) without problem until I hit kick down mode (Automatic gearbox).. it does 'stutter' a little more than it did but I see that as better performance (it feels more like it's stiffled with the MAF connected) I suspect the stuttered performance is a direct result of non linear signals emitted by the ETM pots, right?
thanks for your response btw, I'm learning a little more with each post..
I had a look at the PDF's in the Vexed forum too, together with the history of faults and am sorta convinced to go an give my dealer a verbal beating on Monday demanding (politely of course
) that my ETM is replaced gratis

My tendency would be to believe the original dealer diagnosis, ETM, and follow your plan to beat on them and Volvo over that. MAF failure has unique codes.
With MAF disconnected and ETM failing, you have two interdependent engine components running on special (substitute) code and interacting. Who knows what the symptoms will be??? Tallyho!

The question was asked if the ETM was only covered in the U.S. Actually, I understand that it is covered for all of North America. I hope you guys on the other side of the pond get yours taken care of by Volvo in the very near future. This exension of warranty needs to be global...I have friends in Japan who are going though what your'e going through too...I know it sux.
BTW, the company that's "rebuilding" them don't know what they're doing (the one on eBay). They were "investigated" by a guy who posts over on the Volvo70XC site who sent one off to them and got it back a week later to find out that it was surging too and needed a dealer upgrade anyway, but even with the software download, it did not work correctly. Last thing I heard was that he was trying to get his money back from them.
