1999 S70 AWD with tire problem

Post by dbleagle »

My 1999 S70 AWD is on its third set of tires with 120k miles, seems I can only get about 40k out of each set. I carefully monitor the tire pressure, get the tires rotated about every 5k and stilll have wear problems on the outside of the tread on both front tires. The local Volvo dealers mechanic says the camber, caster and toe in are all set to factory specs. Any ideas what causes the tires to wear in this manner or is this just a common problem with front drive/AWD cars?

I'd get a second opinion on the alignment. & are you replacing those tires with Pirelli's or Continentals? Stop! they won't go the distance, but that won't be the source of your uneven wear.....unless you're Joey Chitwood, those wheels aren't pointed straight down the road.

LOL, I'd be thrilled to get 40k miles out of a set of tires. My last set lasted about a tenth of that. Stupid gobs of torque  .

By the outside of the tread, do you mean that the majority of the wear is occurring on one side of the tire or that both outsides of the tire are wearing out before the middle?

If both outsides of each tire are wearing and the middle of the tire is not as much then you are under-inflating. 40K miles on a set means you took relatively good care of them...keep it up!
