Volvo Repair Database 89 740 Fuel Filter/Pump

Post by rybateman »

Hey guys,

In the process of diagnosing some starting issues, I've gotten myself into a bit of a mess. I checked spark plugs/wires, MAF, Idle Air Control, and eventually moved on to the fuel system when I had eliminated the rest. Not wanting to pump a ton of unnecessary money into this, the first thing I wanted to do was change out the fuel filter.

Day 1 I realized fairly quickly that none of my wrenches were fitting, so I ordered a set of crow's foot (flared) wrenches, luckily before I rounded off the edges of the nuts on the fuel lines.

Day 2 I got the wrenches in, and after some choice words got one side of the filter disconnected. The fuel didn't seem to be as pressurized as I was expecting, but then again I had unscrewed the gas cap (not sure if that helped with the pressure).

Anyways, the other side of the filter has been a nightmare. I've doused it in PB Blaster every day and spent a good hour or so wrenching on it. It seems to be completely and entirely seized up. After a few days I decided that the limited amount of space under the car wasn't doing me any good, so I removed the fuel line at the inline fuel pump also, which allowed me to pull the fuel filter and pump, connected by a small piece of fuel line that bridges between the two. (see attached photo, and you'll get what I mean).

So now I have it out from underneath the car, but I'm still unable to break that nut. I'm about at the breaking point, considering a fuel filter change certainly shouldn't take one whole week. I'm thinking at this point that if possible I should cut my losses, disconnect the fuel pump from the filter, and try to find a replacement for the "bridge" hose between the two parts.

Does anybody know if this piece can be bought anywhere? Let me know if you're having a hard time seeing it in the images, I can upload some clearer ones. Thanks.

I feel your pain. When I was just out of college I remember changing the fuel filter on my 240 with nothing but two 7 inch crescent wrenches. It was miserable.

Either/or IPD or FCP Groton should have that "bridge hose"to which you refer. I understand it is commonly bent.

Good luck.

FCP have it listed as "1989-1992 Volvo 740 8 Valve Fuel Feed Line". IPD have it listed as "Fuel Line Coupler". The Volvo part number is 1312297.

Also, I just thought of something else. In the case that the filter replacement doesn't solve this issue, I'm planning to work on diagnosing a potential fuel pump cause. Do you guys know what kind of fuel pressure I should be looking for at the fuel rail?

crappy design. I too am currently at a work stoppage for the exact same thing. waiting for the part from IPD. If you can save the fittings then perhaps you can just get some fuel line to bridge between pump and the filter. Mine broke completely on the pump side. Ive been looking for the fuel pressure requirement for a while now too. CAnt find it anywhere.

I recently changed out the filter on my 240 which has the same set up. I had the thing in and out about 5 times before I got it right. When you to get it out put that fuel line that connects to the filter and the pump on while you have it out of the car. Put a socket on the opp. end so you don't round the edges. When you install the filter back on its bracket and go to tighten the line back on the pump the line wants to bend on you. I found that if you losen up the bracket that holds the pump you can tighten up the lines and adjust them. After I have the line connected to the fuel pump I tightened the fuel pump bracket. If you remove the elec. connectors keep track of how they go back. Then I connected the other side with a big cresent and a box wrench. Good luck :)

This was my strategy for the fuel filter:
Step 1: Attempt to break it free for several hours in the bitter cold. Succeed only in breaking the seal, shooting fuel everywhere.

Step 2: Use free towing to Volvo mechanic. Pay him $25 or so to change it.
