reset check engine '97 850 GLT

Post by Megan1 »

I recently purchased a 1997 850 GLT. This morning I got gas for the first time since purchasing the vehicle and shortly after that the check engine light came on, so I'm thinking I did not tighten the gas cap all the way. Is there a way I can reset the light and read the codes? Any advice would be helpful :)

AutoZone will read and sometimes clear codes. A simple way without a code reader is to disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes. You will need the radio code and also will need to set the clock

Don't just clear it...read the code and know what's wrong with your car. There's a reason that it comes on.

Megan,

The code is there for some reason. If you have emissions testing the testers will somtimes read/reset the codes. Many parts stors will also read the codes (some states have laws against restting them). Once you have the code post a reply so that we can assist you with a fix. sometimes it is fairly simple and other times it may be more expensive...

Hi,

I too just recently purchased an 850 wagon.
Went to State Inspection (NJ). Vehicle passed. Got in vehicle, turned car on, Check Engine Light came on. If there was something wrong with vehicle it theoretically should have never passed.
As I was pressed for time, I waited to call the Inspection Station a few days later. They informed me that it might be a loose cap, but to fill a claim form if it didn't fix the problem.
A week later, the light is still on.
What would cause this?

Help?
Thanks.
