I'm looking at a 1999 V70 non turbo with 124k miles. Owner is a wholesaler. He tells me that the oil pressure light comes on only when you come to a stop. His mechanic replaced the sensor and the "O" rings in the pan by . Changed the oil to 20w-50 and the light still comes on. Mech checked the oil pressure with a gauge and was getting 19 lbs @ idle. Is this a good number for oil pressure? I have not seen the car in person yet but the pics look enough to make the 2hr trip to look it over.
The asking price is $2800 but he came to $2500 just before we hung up. I don't know if thats a red flag or just eagar to sell.
What do you guys think??
Thanks in advance
Possible purchase 1999 V70

I'm trying to figure out why the hell they would change the oil to a thicker oil if there were oil pressure problems? 20W-50 is far too heavy for these engines to begin with.
Sure, heavy oil = more pressure, because it's like forcing a milkshake through a straw. That also means less flow, which is not good for an engine that's clearly having trouble pumping around lighter oil. Idiotic idea.
Oil pan O-rings are the normal cause of the low pressure light. Since those have been replaced already, it sounds like that engine might be sludged up or the oil pump or pressure relief valve in the oil pump is failing and it can't maintain good enough pressure.
Oil pressure should be 20+ at idle, and get up to around 50 at 3000 RPM or so. The light normally does not come on unless the pressure is VERY low (under 10 psi).
I would say avoid it. Properly taken care of, these engines should never have problems with oil pressure.

Sounds fishy to me. I wouldn't bother making the drive, especially at that price. Be patient, as there's lots of these cars around on the used market. I bet you'll find a better option closer to home in no time.

People will tell you 98s are the best of the generation because of the cable throttle (non electronic)
I have no issues with 99s or 2000s but as long as you know about the potential throttle body issue and what to look for
(new one installed or not) you will be OK and they do run a bit smoother
