1998 SL, A/C compressor will not engage

Unless its a S/V70, I think they have a green "on"-light.

Here is a pretty good thread with pictures on how to fix the AC compressor clutch by removing shims from the shaft. However, I don't think it's necessary to remove the serpentine belt and loosen the compressor mounts. I did the bread clip fix on my V70 and the shim removal on a Ford f150, and to me it seems as easy to remove the shims as to put in the bread clips, with the gluing and all. For other AC issues, like adding fluid and using pressure gauges, there are some very good auto AC forums. I would recommend learning how to use pressure gauges to anyone with AC problems.

I can't believe I didn't remember to do this. I had to do it on my 2001 cherokee a few years back and it should be a no brainer. Most of the cars i've owned in my lifetime haven't had AC anyways so I'm catching up on that side of things :D
