do i need just a window motor or a regulator as well?

Post by amerika2 »

My 2004 S40 driver's side window is stuck in the middle. It will not go up or down. No sound is made when I pull the switch. It is pretty clear to me that I need a new motor, but the Volvo repair shop wants to charge me $500+ for a motor and regulator. They say the regulator comes with the motor. Maybe it's just easier labor for them to install the two pieces together? Or maybe I need both? Any ideas? All the other windows work fine. And btw, it stopped working after I opened and shut my door while the window was in its current position.

The number of failed motors is low, switch failure is high. Has anyone tested for a failed switch or applied power direct to motor wires at switch? Switch should be eliminated before motor is changed.
If motor is changed it is safe to do regulator as if it stopped it could be regulator bound up that stopped it and the motor change requires no extra labor.
