Trunk Supports on a 1989 240 sedan
I have a 1989 240 sedan. The trunk lid has been sagging really bad lately. On a search of this site, I cannot find how to remove the old supports. These supports are not like the ones that have a ball joint end that pops off. There is a fork on one end that looks like it wedges itself in the upper mount and a small shaft on the other end that I'm not sure how to deal with? I have the new shocks but can't figure this one out. Can anyone help?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
Working from a slightly imperfect memory I think there is a spring pin that has to be driven out from the small shaft.
Bill.

Ok, the fix....leave them in the trunk and they will magically install themselves....not really....but if you have a Volvo mechanic like I do it can happen.
I was able to get the small shaft off, I just needed a little silicone spray on there and a hammer tap. I then put them in the trunk for when I had time to replace the old ones.
I brought my Volvo in for some suspension work, and the magic happened. Thanks Ace.
I asked Ace how he put them in and he said he had to compress the supports in a press and then tie wire around them the long way to keep them partially compressed so they would fit into the lift mechanism. Then once in place, I assume he cut the wire away to allow them to fully expand.
Anyway this should be good information for any of you bashing your head into a sagging trunk lid.

I have never used a press. Open the lid to the full extent of the hydraulic strut and prop it open with a piece of 2" x 1" (minimum) timber. Remove one strut and replace it with a new one. Do the same at the other side.

Thanks, I'm looking at the 'pins' and they look more like rivets. At first they looked like they needed drilling out.
I'm wondering which direction they tap out to. Inwards or outwards to the sides of the chassis. Both the top join and bottom are 'pins' right? Thanks

The top pins still have me stumped?Dome wrote:Thanks, I'm looking at the 'pins' and they look more like rivets. At first they looked like they needed drilling out.

How does one get the buggers out? I have two new trunk lifters ready to go into my 242DL sedan.

The top pins are 'spring pins', Volvo part #951986 which are listed on myvolvopartsonline and VolvoWholesaleParts. They should tap out.
