S60 Bad Oil Cooler?

Post by porschewidebody »

I have two Inlet(hoses) on the oil cooler. Hose A and Siver Piping Hose B. Hose A (left Black Hose) Coolant came out when unplugged. Nothing from Siver Piping Hose B.

On the block itself there are two holes where the holes of the oil cooler line up. I had oil coming out of all 4 of these holes (block and oil cooler), this correct?

Last, I want to see if I have a Functioning oil cooler..What is a test I can use to see if it is working properly?

Thank you for your help.

The piping on the top has Coolant in oil mixture and connects to hose A black hose.

Yes, normal. The two ports on oil sump deliver oil into and out of oil cooling portion and the two hose fittings on back side flow coolant through the coolant circulating portion to remove heat from oil.
As long as no coolant is in the ports mating to sump and the two hose fittings have no motor oil evidence then it is good.

I see some emulsified coolant/oil on the left coolant line in the lower picture. Pressure through the coolant side and through the oil side without leakage to the other will confirm cooler integrity.

Thanks I'm going to get it pressure tested tomorrow. s60 runs great. No coolant in oil but there is oil in coolant.

It's not nice to keep secrets.
If the cooler is good, then you're looking at a head gasket.
Check the transmission fluid too.

I see the mocha milk shake in the coolant lines now. Yuck.

The cooler is a component of interest in cop lingo.
It should be plugged and pressurized and submerged in a tank of boiling water and then pressure tested. Most I have seen will little or no leakage until heated.

That is true I will ask to submerge in boiling water.

Will update tomorrow afternoon on findings of oil cooler when I return from the shop.
