just purchased a 2001 xc70 and after reading some of the posts on these forums i am a little wary of my new toy. surely these cars are not as bad as some are saying or nobody would buy them. i guess i will find out in the months to come.
car has 104000 on it and i checked the belt and it is original so i will change that. it also does not go into neutral while stopping because i tried putting it in neutral and back in drive at light , you can feel it go in and out of gear.
is there any number on the etm to id it ? mine says magneti/marelli made in italy and has 1alde762b on the sticker.
there are always things to spend money on with{ used }cars, so i hope tranny flush, new belts, and possibly etm fix and check suspension bushings and try for 200000?
thanks,d.g.

Sounds like you've figured out you don't have it, but there's no empirical way to tell if a car has had the Stop-Neutral function removed other than using Volvo software at a dealer shop or an indie who leases the system from Volvo, which I've heard runs around $8k/year.
As for ETM, I'm not certain where you're at, but this ETM post might start you down the right path. ETM status is determined by dealer and a sticker is placed on it to mark it as original / fixed / replaced.
And then of course is the 887-post Don's ETM Room which details everything you ever wanted to know about Volvo's ETM problem.
By far your greatest worry is your transmission. Read about what other owners have done to keep their '01s out of the shop (careful drain-n-fills, frequent fluid level/color/smell checking).
And Welcome to MVS! Please let us know how you fare with your XC70. If you can, keep us updated as your ownership progresses, it truly helps the MVS Problem Solving Crew and it helps present/future owners.
