First let me start off by saying I am a woman looking for help for my car that I can understand. I will try to tell everything needed for that help.
I have a 2001 XC V70 with over 112,000 miles on it. I purchased the car in January. A few times since then when at a stop sign it felt as though the car didnt want to move, but with a little more gas it lunged ahead and took off. I was told by a few well meaning friends I might need a new transmission. I took it to a garage and had someone look at it (not Volvo dealer) and they couldn't find anything wrong with the trannie. This past Sunday I tried to back out of my driveway and the car would not move. I gave it a little more gas and it moved fine. When I got out on to the street and put it into "D" it would not move forward or in reverse. I called a friend and he tried to push me out of the middle of the street and he could not move it, even with it in drive. So I just kept applying gas until it did move, leaving skid marks on the street until I got off the road. My friend noticed that the right rear tire was not turning.
When I had some one take the tire off and check the brakes there was nothing amiss. We put everything back on the car, tried it and it drove with not problems, forward or back. Since then it has been fine. But I have to admit I am leery about driving this car too far and having it fail on me again.
Does anyone have any suggestions, advice, or have the same thing happen to them. Keep in mind, you are dealing with a woman, not dumb, just not a real good mechanic.
Thanks in advance,

If the front wheels are doing a burnout and the back wheels are locked then you likely have an issue with the parking brake. Unlike other cars the parking brake is hidden within the rotor you friend examined. Take it to a brake shop with free inspection and have them check the parking brake shoes. They have a common failure of the friction material coming off of the shoe and jamming the rear wheel from turning.
