I can't figure out how these holes are suppose to feel/look when clean. On the top one I can feel an indent on the bottom that would allow oil flow.

On the bottom one my fingers are too big. I tried a small nail just to feel around and it feels completely solid (metal to metal)
I can't do much with a wire brush. How about carb cleaner spray or something?

Does anyone know of a picture to show what these holes look like inside so I can get an idea of what I am trying to clean out?

The lower one takes a turn straight down into the oil pan. I just scraped at it a bit with a knife - there wasn't a whole lot of crud in mine; carb cleaner might work for ya.

You can check for any significant shaft play in the turbo - remove the intake pipe from the side of it and reach in there and try to move the shaft horizontally. There should be no movement (up and down vertical play is normal).

Turbo seals are a possibility still I suppose, but that one low reading on the #1 cylinder is a bit worrisome (of course, it could also be a stuck valve, if the engine hasn't actually been running).

I don't suppose it really matters which way you turn it, but I would still turn it clockwise from the passenger side of the car since that's the way the engine moves.

Thank You

I wish I would have checked that when I had the oil pan off, I scraped at it and blew some carb cleaner down it too. I was able to push the carb cleaner "straw" down a bit but not really easily.

I have NO play in the turbo, not vertical or horizontal. But the turbo spins freely

I didn't get a chance to do the leak down test today. I cleaned the tube and the PTC valve. I used over 1/2 can of carb cleaner on the two so they better be clean and free.

Tomorrow I am hoping to do the leakdown test and put everything back together.

Should I take it for a "spirited run" if it is still smoking and try and clean it out, or will that just do more damage to whatever the problem is?

Go drive it like you stole it (once warmed up please) and see how it acts after that.

Ok so I am trying to ensure the PVC drain is actually clear. I can barely get a thin wire though the hole. How can I be sure it is clear. What size hole should there be? Does anyone have a view of the hole from the front of the engine?

This is what it should not look like. I scraped the chunks out with a small screwdriver.

Thank you very much

Mine is clean as far as I can reach my finger in (nothing like that picture) I am just wondering how big a hole it is between that hole an the other pic that jblackburn posted?

What have people been using to ensure that passage is clean? How big of a passage is it?

Very small. It goes straight back to the engine block and takes an immediate right-angle turn. The passage is probably not much thicker than your car key.

I used a pocketknife to scrape it all out. And a bendy fish tank cleaner brush thing (for canister filter tubes) for the other ports.

Thanks

I assume the right-angle turn is straight down. I will get a "bendy thing" to clean it out lol
