Re: Modifying the Wastegate actuator rod...
thats not even mine i think that was a pic of a subaru. like when i pull it off i just have to pull it a little bit like couple cm's to go back on. I have been running out of gas getting shitty gas mileage. i was getting like 20 23 and i put a new fuel filter and new champion copper plus spark plugs gaped at 28, the old fuel filter looked stock but it didn't have any black tape on it. i couldn't even blow threw it... so maybe now its getting more gas or something i dunno but i put like 10 bucks in it this morning and it only had like 45 miles then went to 20 in less then 2 miles lol i dunno if the turbo is allowing to much air and its matching to much gas or what but i had to take of the battery post and reconnect it to reset the computer cause it wasn't reading right and is sometimes slow and does read right, i dunno maybe i just need to driver her with the new settings for a while so the computer can ajust to the new gas flow lol sorry for the ongoing post.

Not sure what you meant above in the red text...?9394volvo850s wrote:first have a boost gauge installed. factory is not good enough. boost cut with factory ecu is 15 or 15.5 psi. dont do more then 2 turns at a time. 12 - 13psi is safe for stock. be carefull not to boost more then 10psi lower then 3k rpms. bend rods low rpms.

Too much boost at too low of an engine speed = bent connecting rods. The ECU and turbo control valve work together to prevent that from happening, but when you start messing with things like the wastegate rod and manual boost controllers...bad things can happen.

Cool, thanks for the further explanation.
I really need to do CBV diaphragm (can it be done without removing the turbo on a '98 S70 Turbo..?), a new TCV, and THEN -- maybe mess with the wastegate rod.
any good links to turbo repairs/removals with lots of good pictures?? I just got a grasp yesterday on how turbos actually function and are implemented. Man, some very cool stuff!

My 99 S70 T5 was not holding 10 psi longer than one or two second and falling back to 5 psi. After 1/2 turn of waste gate rod adjustment, it is rather bouncing between 7 and 13 psi. My TCV is not stock but AC Delco one though.

Lambo, yes the CBV can be done without removing the Turbo. IPD has a kit with three diffent springs (settings) and you may want to consider their HD Turbo Control Valve. I have them both, and set my wastegate to two full turns. If you decide to go that way, make sure your hoses are all replaced so that you know you have no small leaks.

My 5 speed T5 (99) runs at 11-12 lbs (I don't know why, it's a fast one) and does not fall off, which is thoroughly amazingt5ftw wrote:My 99 S70 T5 was not holding 10 psi longer than one or two second and falling back to 5 psi. You can stop by and try out/have my old turbo control valve if you want it! It still works fine.

I am waiting for a new set of Samco turbo hoses from EST. They are out of stock currently, but will have them late this month. When I put them on, I will see if it does the same. If I still have the problem I should try your stock TCV. Mine was dead, and almost felt like driving without turbo before the TCV replacement.

It seems that my boost fluctuation is gone. Even before replacing the IC hoses, it subsided itself quite a lot. I suspect that the new CBV spring and the waste gate adjustment needed sort of break-in time, which was about three weeks for me. After I cleaned the intercooler and replaced IC hoses, boosting became very stable. However, shifting is still jerky. I thought it was because of dead TCV but it is not. I will put lower transmission mount and see if it fixes. After 107K miles nothing is as it supposed to be.
