How do I install child seat in Volvo 850? 1994...

Post by Biggy »

I just got used 1994 850. My wife is due to have her baby any minute now....literally... So..I went out to install the car seat. There is no latch system and the seat belts don't appear to lock out by pulling them out the whole way. Any ideas on how this is done? Thanks!!

I'm sorry to say you're going to have to use the dreaded locking clip. the locking clip should come with the car seat. The seat belts are not the ratcheting kind and there are no LATCH points so your only option is to use the locking clip to keep the seat belt tight. There is also a retrofit kit for a rear tether that you can get at any Volvo dealer but you probably won't need that for a while. Best thing to do is follow the user manual that came with the car seat. You might also take the car with the seat to your local fire station where they can check the installation to see if it is correct.

Hope that helps and best of luck! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Wait!!! There IS a latch holder for the 94's - i use mine every day....but first things first. Sedan, right? Wagons do not have this.

You'll have your seat back-ward facing, and cannot use the upper latch for the first year because of this. Go to Pep Boys or any such auto parts store, they have a rachet'er which I believe the first poster is referring to - works like those ratcheting straps, tightens your belt down to hold the seat properly - I use it in all my cars, there is not enough tension in any car's seat belt, no matter what they say.

After a year, you can flip the kid around and then use the upper latch mount - it goes over the seat, under the headrest, and hooks under where the rear speakers are - you'll need a part from the dealer to make it work but that upper holder is very important.

The part I'm referring to is called a rear seat tether and is retrofit onto the back of the rear seat. You buy the parts at a Volvo dealer. If you have a wagon, ask for part number 9475766 - Attachment Kit.

I'm really not familiar with the sedans except that there is a tether retrofit kit available from Volvo that installs to the parcel shelf. That part number is 9475763. However, I doubt LATCH as a car seat standard was around back in 1994 as it was mandated in 2002.

In my 95 wagon, the seat belt type is called ELR or Emergency Locking Retractor. This, along with the free-sliding latchplate dictates the use of the locking clip. ELR belts only lock in an emergency situation like jamming on the brakes or an accident. An ALR belt is the type you usually can pull all the way out of the retractor which then 'ratchets' back into the retractor. Life would be easier if we had ALR but unfortunately we don't. This is a little complicated to explain but maybe this link will help.

The ratcheting device Smash mentioned is not what I'm referring to. This is just my opinion and others will certainly disagree but I'm personally not in favor of those devices for a couple of reasons.

1. That device has not been tested by the car seat manufacturers using their car seats. The car seat manufacturers do test their seats using their supplied locking clips so that 's what I use.

2. I can get the car seat tight enough without using an additional ratcheting device.

What works for me is to install the locking clip on the belt before installing the seat. Experimenting on exactly where to place the clip is essential. Then I clip the seat belt into the buckle by getting my knees into the car seat and my back against the roof of the car so I have some leverage to push the car seat down. It's tough, but the car seat cannot move more than one inch at the belt attachment points.

Another trick with the wagon is to recline the rear seat a bit, install the car seat, then bring the rear seat back to upright which tightens everything up even more.

Hope this helps and please let me know if you have any questions.
