There's a llink here on how to perform a modified flush on your trans. I did this on my 05 S60 and couldn't believe just how dirty the fluid actually was. Now, I wasn't having any problems with my trans, and I have 101K on the car now. I simply did the flush in an attempt to make it last as long as I possibly can. I to was informed by my Volvo dealer in Lexington, KY they don't do the trans service, but if I were a betting man would almost wadger they would love to put a new trans in my car. I don't know about you, or others here, but I think my local dealer is absolutely horrible.

I am going to flush the transmission on my V70 2002. I read a bunch of postings and most of them say to replace the transmission plug crush ring. Is that ring the same as the oil crush ring? Can I use the oil crush ring in lieu of the transmission crush ring?

Yes it's just the aluminum washer for the drain plug...

Thank you flylow I changed it out yesterday and it shifts soothe as silk. The oil crush ring and the transmission crush ring are one and the same.

i wish my 2002 VW Golf i let my daughter now drive was as easy as my 2004 V70 to do a tranny drain and fill on!!
i have been doing my v70 D&F about every other oil change since i have the skead plate off why not.. also started using Royal Purple ATF. she shifts pretty smooth for 150K....

The owner's manual on the 2006 V70 (R) says the transmission does NOT need servicing. There's no dipstick, either. BUT, the owner's manual gets around this "never service" statement by also saying UNLESS the transmission is subject to severe conditions, which is virtually everything almost everyone does (trailer, hills, mountains, city driving, hot weather driving...etc.) So I don't care what the dealer says, I'm changing mine out with flushes at every 50K miles per the info here.

That is a great demo on the fluid flush but i don't know that i could pull that off. My V70 has been jumping and when i reverse and put it into drive it jumps. I love my car but it sure has been a money pit.

"classic" trans flare in my 02 v70xc with 180,000 miles so i do a drain and fill everytime i change my mobil1 syn. was told to let the fluid run it's course to let the detergents do their job before just drain/fill/flushing each time. the car seems to really like it. flaring comes and goes. software update seemed to help too, for a while. next is the b2 piston? but i think i'll deal and keep changing the fluid with the toyota atf. the car does best when it's driven like it wants to be.

I am a lifelong shadetree mechanic and engineer that started my career in hydraulics design, I'm also on my fourth Volvo (fifth if you count my daughters). All the reading here about the 2001's transmision problems got me thinking about the transmission fluid.

I just couldn't fathom that there is no specification for fluid change, no filter and no service plan. I'm used to changing tranny filters, and fluid at least a couple times in a vehicle's life.

I started getting confused when I couldn't find a filter spec anywhere. Then I couldn't find a change interval anywhere. Then reading more I finally realized that Volvo fills the transmission for life and doesn't plan on any changing during the life of the vehicle. Weird. Just, plain weird.

Well, my 2001 S60 has 142K on the odometer and still runs perfectly. I was nervous about the transmission complaints so decided to check my fluid. I devised a clever method to draw out an ounce of fluid from deep down the dipstick tube.

I then spread the fluid out and examined it under my microscope. I was pleasantly suprised. The fluid was not burnt. It was reddish-brown but definitely not burnt. The color was uniform throughout. There were no contaminants and no particulate.

Perhaps a previous owner had changed the fluid but I hadn't during the 70K I drove it. Visually, the fluid looked really good. Back in my shadetee mechanic days, this would have looked like fluid fomr my chevy that had about 20k on it.

So, for now, I am not going to flush nor drain-n-fill any. Perhaps when I get closer to 200K I'll do a drain-n-fill.

I found this thread to be extremely useful. We just got my wife a 2001 V70 with 124,000. The private owner seemed to take very good care of the car, but he never mentioned nor can I find any transmission maintenance in his records. I recently conducted my first drain and fill of four qts.

I purchased the Toyota T-IV for about $6.50/qt. from a dealership after not finding Mobil 3309 anywhere local. We were not having any shift problems but was prompted to do it after reading that the 2001's seem to be prone to transmission issues. The fluid was very dark but did not have a burnt smell. I did notice silver/metal colored paste on the magnetic drain plug but no actual metal pieces.

We have already put over 4,000 on this car in two months and we love it. I plan on doing a 4 qt. drain and fill during my next three oil changes which I conduct at 4,000 miles. Hopefully this will keep it running smooth as lon as possible.
