Need some help on fixing my paint finish

Post by thecheat »

I've bought a 10" orbital buffer and some light and medium compound. So far the hood and roof have made a HUGE recovery with doing the compounding but I need to work more on the left side and tailgate. The right side is a respray disaster from the previous owner so I'm not even messing with it yet.

How good can I expect to get the paint? I have gone from a chalky and almost orange colored red to a very deep red. I don't quite have a shine in the finish but if you look at reflections they are very defined. The side and tailgate need another whack with the compound because they're still a bit chalky.

I compounded, used cleaner wax, then used the light compound (swirl remover) but didn't really see much difference after the cleaner wax.

What is the best way to avoid the black trim? Painter's tape?

Any suggestions on technique?

All I can comment on is the trim question; most of it can be removed! The roof rack will come off with a Torx, and the door and windshield moldings will pop off with a "gentle force" (oxymoron?!) Door gaskets and bumpers would do well with the painters tape.

Any chance you have some before & after pics to post?
