850 oil pressure issues, no oil in valvetrain

Hey Salty, still driving around with no light blaring at you? I hope so! What's the latest?
My apologies to Salty and anyone else caught on the edge of his seat awaiting the latest word in my soap opera.
I've had all manner of distractions since last week this time that have kept me from my freezing garage floor and another session of getting my eyes full of undercar debris, but it's clear sailing here for the next couple of days, so I hope to have more stupid questions soon. Or as I said before, maybe I'll have a parts car for sale; you'll see me selling off pieces on ebay. Well, everything not related to oil pressure anyway. How about a very slightly used O-ring kit, though?
I'll be back, and no doubt more confused than ever. Thanks for helping.
Greg
ps. Thanks again Matt. Hope you got my PM reply. G

oil light lost among the myriad of other festive coloured lamps. This week, # 3 coilpack and thermostat. Volvo of Toronto now has a picture of me framed on the wall under "founding members" banner. Fried ABS control unit stays put, Ridgeline arrives next week. Final insult? Highest value on trade achieved (& I know a lot of people in the business) $15,000.00 CDN
THAT'S A FULLY LOADED P2 CAR FOLKS!!! Ford can keep 'em.
Grego, may the gods smile upon your garage floor this week. Best of luck.

Salty, don't leave me now! I thought we were in this to the end, man! Well, I guess you're telling us this IS the end for you. Sorry to hear it...but I may be right behind you. Hey, maybe they'll take mine as well, perhaps bump your trade up a couple hundred smackers.
I'll go back to my old Saab 900 T, 300k miles, that always starts, always does what I ask it to, and if something does go wrong, it's easy to fix. But for now, I have an 850 sprawled on my garage floor, and I am driven to at least find its issues, and try to solve them. But I'll keep your lessons in mind, and if this is the tip of my iceberg, I'll call on your experience and let her go. You know, those Ridgelines are pretty nice. And we have a dealer right here in town, too. Hmmmm.
Good luck, you know I've heard horror stories about Hondas. Well, not really. Just trying to make myself feel better.
Thanks! Greg

if I hadn't already been running a Civic for 3 years, you might give me pause to think, but I'm not worried about reliability, just paying for it....besides, I boat with the dealer principle & the factory is 40 minutes from my office (support the local economy y'know). Just really smarting from that $$$hit - 40+K in 5 model years? That's Audi territory. Our Civic is already 4K positive if I were to get out of that - cars are lousy investments but I've had Chevy's that have held their value better..certainly not what I expected from a "premium" european brand.

Grego - fixed yet? Well, I'm sure there were some of you out there who weren't going to miss my bitching about this xc70 of mine, but....whent to pick up the Honda. Wholesaler was there to recieve the Volvo. Comes back inside "hey, the oil light is on" Ya I said, I told you that last week it comes & goes. "it wasn't on last weeK" uh huh, but I told you it does....."this car needs a motor"....maybe it does - but it's 15 grand "NO, I'll only pay 8" EIGHT FRIGGIN THOUSAND BUCKS!!!!! I Can get 3 for the f**kin air bags!!! Look people, I'm sorry here & I'm trying to keep from making it necessary for Matt to edit this, but I'm so BLEEPIN pissed off!!! - I find it unfathomable that this peice of garbage came from the same engineering department as my 245, 745 & 855...this thing couldn't suck the exhaust of those cars....I so very frustrated because I beleived in the product so much - I was driving turbo wagons when it wasn't cool to drive a wagon. I've got friends driving Volvo's because of me pushing them that way. The only thing that resembles Volvo on this thing is the odd nameplate stuck to it otherwise, you could confuse it for any Italian or Eastern block vehicle! Maybe I'm feeling betrayed, but I find it hard to beleive I'm the only one & I feel this inexcusable for a high end car that received MORE than the required service. I'm thinking the ETM situation is a sign of things to come. I find it curious that I see in the forum of guys getting a 'great' deal on an '01 car all the time, but I can tell you, the whiolesale value on this thing SUCKS! I can't imaging what all these 70K XC90's are going to be selling for in a couple of years, but if my xc70 is any indication, then not much. So, I'm stuck with this thing. Now if anyone knows of an engine rebuilder who will actually quote me on a rebuild in the Toronto area - as up to now, no one will touch it - that would be great. So now it's off to the IPD webste - if I'm buried in this thing might as well go all 6 feet. Grego, I FEEL YOUR PAIN....be glad you didn't spend big bucks to aquire your car....but now it's time for you to give me some hope.

Unfortunately the IPD site is down. Sorry to send you to another forum but guys over at VolvoSpeed reguild engines all the time. You might try pleading your case over there...many more owners so I'm thinking that you might get lucky finding someone there in the Toronto area. I feel for you man. I hope there's better luck coming your way...and real soon.

Allright Salty, hang in there. At least it can't get worse, right? I've been away, and mine is still sitting on stands, with the oil pan sitting on the bench awaiting its new coat of the pink sealant and reinstallation. I haven't been able to touch it since before my last posts. Been driving my old Saab and getting by just dandy in the snow and cold here.
But, like you, I have to get to the bottom of my my Volvo's issues. Even if it may end up as trade fodder soon after. I have pretty much exhausted the 'net looking for clues while I've been desk-bound, though. You know what I found out? Hey, the oil pumps never go out on these cars! But it doesn't make sense that it'd be clogged up between the pan and filter either. So everyone, including me, just shrugs with palms up. We don't know.
I still hope to get the pump pulled out soon and I hope it comes out in pieces, so I can get an answer. I've had a couple more allusions to the relief vavle in the pump being plastic and regularly breaking, but I can't find any info on it. Anyone??
So, we're both still stuck, waiting to wake up. For this kind of headache, an old Alfa would be much more fun... when running!
I'll have news soon I hope, and hopefully you will get a good word as well.

NEVER, EVER say it can't get worse. I haven't mentioned the howl that comes from the 'non-servicable' rear end & the hope that when I do replace the ABS control unit, the tranny will stop slamming into gear at every downshift - oh ya, I now need at lest 1 O2 sensor. The silver lining to all this I guess is that I can at least write the repairs off against my business although, I'm sure to be setting myself up for an audit I mean, who would believe that somebody could (or would) spend this kind of money to maintain a 5 year old car? So I was thinking, before you slap that oil pan back on, why not take a chapter from the inbred ol' boys service manual & perform a vehicular gynecological exam? Pull the pump off - seeing as how you're going that way, pull the oil pick up, & ram something like a coat hanger or something flexible through that galley. Should be a short distance & if you've got any sort of blockage there, you're sure to get it. I'm convinced that the only way to clear this crap from inside the motor, is th physically chisel it out. Maybe that will get you enough flow back to reserect the bitch. Just a thought.

BTW - thanks to MadeinJapan for the empathy and the heads up - I've IM'd Scott Hart to see if that XC motor he has will swap out with mine....that sounds almost too good to be true....cross your fingers for me.
