92 volvo 240 engine stalls when decelerate

Post by yz »

Hi there,

I am new to this forum and also a car dummy.

I owned my 92 volvo 240 for about 3yrs including two years without moving it. That's probably the reason it starts to give me some trouble now.

I have sent my car to the only local garage specialized in volvo, but the problem is still there. I hope that someone here can give me some advises.

Basically, the engine tends to stall whenever I decelerate the car. The garage person persuaded me to change the air mass meter for $300. But so far it seems that nothing has changed (I will contact them again). As I am totally ignorant about cars, I just wonder if this is the right way or the only way I can solve this problem.

If anyone here can give me some advises here, I would be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advanc.

Thanks for the reply.

Actually it's the same when it is a full tank too. But it does get a bit better when I stop using it for a while (like one day or two) and will get back after some use.

there is a micro switch in the throttle position sensor that tells the ecu the car is at idle. If you close the throttle by hand you shoud hear a distinct click. Sometimes the throttle body gets crudded up and it cannot make this switch. If you cannot hear click you can clean throttle body which should fix it or you can adjust throttle position sensor until you hear click. You can also clean the idle air control valve with carb cleaner and your car will run better it is the cylindrical valve under the intake manifold in the front with two hoses and one electrical connection. Also the hose that runs from your intake to your fuel pressure regulator. if this has cracks or a hole or has fallen off your car will stalll too.

Thanks a lot! I'll try what you suggested and see how it goes.
