Gas guage shows quarter tank, engine shuts down

Post by jobremi1 »

We own a 2004 XC90, front-wheel drive, 5-cylinder. We were on the highway with a 1/4 tank of gas (& "114 miles to empty tank") showing on the gauge when the car shut down. Luckily I had a friend driving by that took me to the gas station where I purchased & put 2-gallons of gas in the tank & it started right up. My wife has had this happen to her before too at about the 1/4 tank remaining mark. When I went to the gas station to fill up it took about 3/4 of a tank of gas so the gauge was reading correctly. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Very frustrating.

Thanks

you have two level sensors in this tank the only way to tell would be to return to the dealer and have them read each sensor you may have one hanging up or the ejector pump on the fuel pump has failed and your not pumping out the fuel on the left side thus the reading is correct the gas is all on the left side and your fuel pump is in the right with no fuel to supply to the engine

Thank you for your answer. Any idea what they charge for this service (testing the sensors)? Anyway for me to check myself?
