Long story short, I want to find out the mileage on my 96 850R before I repair the odometer. I've read threads that have said that dealers can read it with the VST. I don't know that many or any dealers still have a VST, believe most are using DICE. Nonetheless, I've had 3 dealers within about 100miles all tell me they cannot, or they can, but they have to remove the cluster, Huh?
If anyone has successfully had a dealer read the mileage on their 96 or 97 tell me how they did it, please!
Thanks!!!
Anyone with a 96 or 97 850 have a dealer read the mileage?

Tech over on VolvoForums has indicated in earlier posts that he has done this. I think it gets a tad deep in the weeds on the menu for the scan tool and even many dealers can't seem to find it.
It might be worth a post over there to get an answer.
On my '96's I just changed all of the timing belts and fixed the gears. At least at that point I have a reference for the next belt change. On my '94 I corrected the odometer since it was so easy.

Thanks for the direction Lee, I will look for TECH on the Volvoforums.
I would think there is some way to read it. I wish it were as easy as it is on the 95 and older models. That said, I can't imagine that the functionality of the cluster to store the mileage would go away from 95 to 96. I even contacted VCNA, they said it was not possible. I don't know. Yet I would like to know the mileage.

There is no need to remove the cluster.
My Volvo dealership in Belgrade succesfully read my current mileage via obdII back in 2000 when i bought the car.
If you make a little search, there is a thread here on MVS how to read actual miles from obdII yourself.I'll try to find it for you.
Ok,here it is:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=28138
Almost forgot....it's not a strange thing that dealership will tell you that reading actual miles from obdII is not possible. There is a plenty of members here and over volvospeed who claims that their dealerships told them that it isn't possible.
They just don't know or they didn't trained HOW to use their sophisticated diagnostic tool.

Thanks for the reply misha. I came across that post a while back, but when I tried it I was unable get it to work. IIRC all that I got was a dim LED. VOL-FCR works to read the codes for the cluster just fine so I know it can communicate with it.
Oh I completely agree it is most likely a training issue, I'm sure the equipment can, but like Lee said, it is probably an option that is deep in the menus.

This is an old thread but I just recently had the mileage read on our 1996 850 by a local dealer,
the Westport Connecticut dealer. They have pictures on the wall of all of their
service staff with a note of when they started working there. The guy behind the
counter said that it could not be done, I pressed him saying I'm sure that it can
be done. He went in back, talked to a mechanic who had worked there since
1993 and he came out and said yes, I think it can be done but I have to look
around with the tool since he didn't remember where it was. He did it in about
15 minutes and didn't charge me! Very nice dealer!

Keep in mind dealers today are just parts replacement techs. No repairs are really done.
If the repair requires something in between 2 parts, they are stumped.
