A2 3-1-4 Error code problem

Post by DouglasTrumbo »

I am getting the 3-1-4 error code on my ignition system. I know this could mean the signal is absent ( bad sensor) or faulty (out of time) is tyhere a way to tell without having to tear the car apart? And would changing the timing belt be too much of a problem for a novice to do?

Welcome to MVS,

Does the car run?

If it is running then the Cam Position sensor is likely OK and you can just clear the code. The Cam Position Sensor signal can get interfered with by the ignition wires and there was a TSB that called for using a zip tie to fold the sensor wires away from the coil and plug wires.

If the car is not running then it may indeed be a bad sensor but that is a very easy fix. The sensor is on the back of the exhaust camshaft and it is literally two bolts and unplugging the wires from the old sensor and plugging the new one in. It is an expensive bugger though.

No, the car is not running, and I found the sensor. I just don't have the torx bit to take it out yet. My car atually still has the heat sheilding and it pulled away from the distributor using the same method as when it came out of the factory.

^^ Keeping the wires away form the distributor that is. I also am toying with the idea that the timing belt could have broken, I am going to take off the cover and have a look later today.
