4th of July plans?

Post by jblackburn »

Summer holidays are the best - time to see friends, family, and have cookouts (or, if you're from the north, BBQ's - that term confused me so much when I first got to Virginia - when I was invited to my first "BBQ" I was expecting a pig roasting  ).

It's supposed to be a whopping 99 degrees in Durham on Monday, but we're hoping to make the best of it and either head to the beach or hang out in a friends pool all day and go to see fireworks somewhere that night.

What's everyone else doing for the weekend?

I've been on a few bike rides this weekend too, which was nice, although I almost had a bad ending today. Some idiot was turning right into a McDonalds ( ) and cut me off. No signal, he didn't appear to have even looked or checked his mirrors. I almost got swept under his SUV... that was a scary experience. I left him with some nice "sailor" words to think about.

We're going to have a little barbecue at my place tomorrow (gas stove only... charcoal illegal too :| ). Other than that, not much else going on. I do need to study for my finance exam though. Ughh...

Wow; glad you're ok, Ed!

Silly un-southern people, THIS is BBQ. Cooked all day outside in 97 degree North Carolina heat on a Brinkmann smoker :)

I went to my "cabin" at the Lake of the Ozarks for the weekend. Sadly I didn't take the Flip camera with me - the Lake of the Ozarks is like WW-III on the 4th of July. Sunday night was the big night for fireworks but right at dusk a huge thunderstorm rolled through which delayed the carnage for a couple of hours.

Saturday was rib day and it was danged good. It was just my wife and I this weekend so a small rack of baby back ribs - 3.5 hours on the Brinkmann Smoker at 225 degrees and they were fall off the bone perfect.

What I love about the Lake of the Ozarks is that there is very little that is restricted. If I want to blow off 2" mortars from my dock the worst I get from the neighbors is OOOH - AHHH - and applause.

Freedom is what the 4th of July is all about.

Drinking, joking and eating at my mom's in castle rock, Co. (currently!)

We just had a neighborhood kids' parade with r,w&b streamer-decorated bikes and scooters, wagons and dogs, with an ice cream truck (sadly, non-Volvo) at the end of the route with free ice cream for everybody. Pix tomorrow.

I had a lazy 4th with the family. We ended up just staying home the whole weekend. We did not even go see the fireworks. I think we just needed some R and R.
