I think all that is built into the fuel pump. Pretty sure that's where the check valve is too.

I would think it would be on the engine since it is likely vacuum operated...

According to this post, the FPR is under the injector rail and is a brass color.Fuel Pump
850 is equipped with an in-tank fuel pump. Fuel pump is equipped with check valves to hold fuel pressure in system when ignition is off. Fuel from main pump is sent through an in-line fuel filter. Fuel is then sent to fuel pressure regulator where pressure is maintained at a constant pressure in relationship to manifold pressure. Excess fuel returns to fuel tank via a return line.
Fuel Pressure Regulator
Pressure regulator is a sealed unit which is divided by a diaphragm into 2 chambers (fuel and spring chambers). Fuel chamber receives fuel through inlet side from injector fuel rail. Spring chamber is connected to intake manifold vacuum. At idle, intake manifold vacuum is high. Diaphragm is pulled back by intake manifold vacuum. Any excessive fuel is returned to fuel tank. As throttle is depressed, intake manifold vacuum decreases. Regulator spring overcomes manifold vacuum, increasing fuel pressure.

Perfect timing. My brand new Bosch fuel filter has been behaving itself right inside the box it came in since last summer. Time to get it installed. Thanks for the tips. BTW: I didn't do it last summer b/c I read somewhere the hose clamps are a bear to deal with. Plus the hose might be brittle and tear, then a little tiny project becomes much bigger. Tell me none of this is true.

I replaced the fuel filter last weekend on my '97 855 GLT at 148K miles, and it was pretty straightforward. The fuel lines have quick disconnect couplers on the ends-- you just pull the coupler back and pull the fitting off of the end of the filter. That part of the job was pretty easy. The trickier part for me what that the bracket holding the fuel filter in place was rusted together and twisted as I loosened the bolt. After I got the bolt out, I had to twist and bend the bracket back into shape (and it only got close to the original shape -- there is still a bit of a twist in it). I cleaned the bolt up with a wire brush and sprayed the bracket, nut and bolt with lithium grease.

Is it necessary to "bleed" the system once the filter is replaced?
