Mechanic in MA? Expected Costs?

Post by gphmdyw »

Hi Fellas,

Just bought a beautiful 2002 S60 AWD and she needs the whole Timing Belt job done.

Stealership Price: $1000 (they offered me a "great" price of $650 and assured me the water pump was included and when I got there to have it done they said, "Oh, no...the water pump is another $350. I left.)
Independent Mechanic #1 Price: $700 (but his reputation wasn't the best)
" #2 Price: $800 (good reputation)
" #3 Price: $800 including 105k mi service (not sure about reputation)

Do these numbers sound right? I read somewhere I should be able to find a good mechanic to do it for $500.

Also, what would you expect to pay for front brake pads and rotors, and would you consider aftermarket? I was told they always squeak, esp on a Volvo, and if I'd only save $70 I'd rather go with the best.
