MAF replaced with generic MAF -- 98 V70 running very poorly!

Post by lesmith »

Alright, 98 V70 (non-turbo) 280k miles coming right up... Car was running fine, my husband parked it, and two days later he went to drive it to the airport to pick me up- car was misfiring and acting like pure crap. He went and had the codes read- it was a series of misfire codes and a MAF high output code. Fine, we managed to get it home (using WAYYYY too much gas, of course- but we had no other choice). It wouldn't stay running at stop lights or any time you didn't have your foot on the gas for that matter, and was darn impossible to restart. Got it in the driveway and started investigating. Looked at the almost brand new spark plugs and they were FILTHY, cleaned them off, and it helped for a minute or two, before fouling out again. We did a little research and disconnected the MAF and it would run fine in the driveway for a minute or two just to test it. We bought a re-manufactured MAF from the auto parts store... this and cleaning the spark plugs again seemed to fix the problem... for a few days.

Now it has started this revving problem, where in park and neutral it's steady at 1000 rpm, and then it'll start dipping to 6 or 7 and then back up. We turn the car off before it gets too bad, but if we let it, it'd obviously cut out eventually. It won't do this when you start the car for the first time of the day, only after it is thoroughly warmed up... and it's been HOT here for the past month+!!

Came back from a doctor's appointment a week or so ago to find a random piece of metal in the driveway- it was the top part of the exhaust clamp that connects the catalytic converter to the muffler. The bottom piece was long gone and the screw that remained was so rusty, we could have tricked the Smithsonian into thinking it was a caveman artifact... After replacing this clamp, the problem of the revving once again seemed to calm down for a few days, however now it's back with a vengeance, and today it began to rev while in drive, waiting in line at the bank...

Did we screw ourselves with this generic MAF? would replacing it with a Bosch MAF solve this problem? Is it something else? I'm literally a week away from having a baby, this is our most reliable car, and we just want to get this all figured out asap!!

Ps... we figured we might as well replace the original O2 sensors as they are likely shot anyways, and are about to do the Timing belt/water pump, and PCV system- so all of that is currently on it's way to our house... lets see what else we have to do! yayy!!

I know from numerous posts here that the consensus is to always get the "real" MAF sensor; the auto parts stores don't carry them, just the generics. I don't know if this would solve all of the problems, though, but should solve some at least.

You need a Bosch MAF
If, after that, it still runs poorly you have other issues

Front O2 sensor would be at the top of my list if the MAF doesn't do it. The loping idle AFTER it warms up usually indicates a bad MAF/O2 or a combination of the two.

Great write up!! And Happy news on the baby. Give us an update on all the vitals later. MAF sounds like mine when I forgot to plug it back in.

BTW: Maybe take a cab to the hospital. If it's too far, rent a car! Not a time for experimenting.

haha, well they do have almost 300k on them, as my dad says he doesn't remember ever having them replaced... so it's a good thing they are in the mail!! I appreciate the help- we were getting flustered. Trying to get the auto parts store to order us a Bosch MAF right now-they say no such thing exists... pfft too bad I'm on THEIR website and gave them an actual part number for said non-existent part... or better yet, they can have it back!! Just refund me for the crappy part you sold me and I'll buy it elsewhere, because I sure don't want to use the warranty to get the exact same thing!!

There is also a very good MAF spray cleaner. But I wouldn't waste it on a cheapo or off/brand MAF.

hmmm... we purchased from FCP Groton, they are the v70 direct fit O2 sensors... Am I correct in assuming these will be good? Hope so!! Here's the link to what we actually purchased:
