Front axle "clicking" Sound

Post by radmangto »

Hi All .... I have a 2005 V70 Turbo .... 82,000 miles. Original owner. Body and interior are near showroom condition. Have been agonizing as to when to do the timing chain/water pump/plugs/ etc. change. The immediate concern for me is just these past many weeks, when I back the V out of our carport (now a florida resident!) and stop to put the trans in D, I get a single clicking sound when going from reverse to forward in the trans. :?: Under normal highway speed, all seems well. At stop lights, I don't seem to hear it (although the windows are up and the AC is on).

I suspect that is the front drive CV joint. I was planning a trip to Columbus OH onto NJ and then back through Knoxville before returning Punta Gorda, Fl in the next few weeks. Is this a fix now issue or is it a normal aging/wear issue that is not a danger at this time. :?:

Now that we are both retired, the V rarely gets used; the mid-grade gas pricing here may have something to do with that.

Now in the retirement mode, extra cash is not readily available for these unexpected issues. I was hoping the V would last many more years without this kind of maintainance .... I guess that wishful thinking.

Any help or opinions would be greatful ....

Regards,
Radman

The outer end of the axle is splined and inserts into the hub. On that car there is a 10mm bolt (14mm head) that holts axle in. This bolt does not fasten the splines securely like the old large axle nut. The result is the click you are hearing. The hub and axle can be cleaned and a Loc-tite product for splines can be used to take up the clearance. The Loc-tite stuff will make axle removal later more difficult but it cures the click.
