Can any damage to the 5 cylinder engine occur if the timing belt breaks?

Absolutely.

It can actually be "game over" for the engine. At a minimum it will take out several valves and require that the head gets pulled and re-worked by a machine shop.

Its a glorified paper weight after T belt failure.
Ambitious but rubbish
