Volvo 850 engine stops if AC compressor connected

Thank you for your work on this site. We have a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT w/ electronic climate control, ~75,000 miles. A/C system was replaced in summer '03, when evaporator failed. In summer '05, A/C compressor began cycling on/off every 45 sec or so and did not cool if outside temperature over 90 (we live in area w/ summer temps are >100). Local Volvo dealer found

I know a couple people have had a very similar problem. Check out this thread... doesn't go real far, but are you having any of the same problems this guy is? Your best bet on a wiring harness would be a salvage yard. A lot of yards will take the harnesses and any other electrical equipment out of the car and store them some place indoors away from the weather. www.car-part.com is a good place to search salvage yards for what you need.

Have you tried just unhooking the battery for about 20-30 minutes (you need the radio code to reactivate it) and letting the ECU re-set itself? The ECU might have gotten used to running without the AC, and now when you plug the AC in, it dies...just a thought and a much cheaper and less hassle of a fix, if it will work. If this works, you can tell all the high fluten Volvo techs to kiss-your-you-know-what
