I keep reading that it may be possible to pull the engine from the top without taking it out with the tranny from the bottom. Has anyone here actually done it, and is it outlined anywhere? I already have the intake, exhaust manifold, and head off and the engine has to come out. There has to be an easier way than out through the bottom.

I've done 5 pulls in the past 8 months, and have gone out the top every time, engine and transmission together. There's a writeup that's pinned at the top of the page on how to do it.

Do you use the load leveler when you pull it out the top? I am preparing to pull, don't have one of those but thinking I will be OK.

On the main page for this forum there are four permanent threads. The engine and trans removal is the 4th one down.

Yep, Im a dork. I found it. Thanks.
Please answer the original question.
I have an 5cyl engine with 316k miles that just blew the head gasket.
I have a good motor with 96k miles on the garage floor
I only want to swap engines.
If I leave the trans in as others have done, I will save a lot of work and risk of messing something up.
I will also be able to move the car out from under my chain hoist without damaging the wheel bearings.
Then when I switch engines on the chain, I can roll the car back underneath and drop the second engine in.
I have a 1998 Chilton's S70 Volvo repair manual. but have not found anything yet but that the procedure is preferred.
Then they go on to removing with trans.
I also have your Volvo_ 850.pdf + an 850-95 manual, + 1998 Volvo S70 Service manual on PDF
So far nothing detailing this or the drop out the bottom procedure that I choose not to use unless the entire front drive drops out.

If you have an auto, maybe. Manual trans? No way. There's nowhere near enough clearance between the front of the engine and the body of the car to move the engine over enough to clear the pressure plate. I really doubt there would be enough clearance to clear the flex plate of an auto either, but it just might squeeze through.
Honestly, if you're only moving the car a few feet, you're not going to damage the bearings. If you're really that worried about it, put a jack under the subframe, and roll it out on the jack. But no, you're not going to save a lot of work by leaving the trans in place, and you're going to create a lot of headache attempting to get the trans and engine lined up correctly to bolt them back together - remember, the trans is only supported by one mount. How are you going to manuever the trans while it's still in the car to get it to line up with the engine?
There's reasons why no one has done this before.....
