Front and rear brake rotor lip

Post by Jvestal »

Hi all,

Recently purchased a 2005 XC90 2.5T AWD with 65,000 miles and am doing all the routine maintenance with the help of this awesome website.

I purchased new volvo pads already and am wondering if I also need to replace the rotors too. Everything works and stops properly but all the rotors have a sizable lip around the edges.

Is this the way they are manufactured or from wear?

Also, if anyone has a suggestion on where to buy new ones if needed that would be appreciated (I have the bigger front rotors).

They are made flat but the rotors wear and since pads do not contact at the outer edge you end up with the lip. The picture looks like a lip that is OK for this set of pads but expect rotors on next brake pad replacement. Of course, viewing a photos is no replacement for a measuring rotor thickness with a micrometer.

I order all my stuff from www.ipdusa.com. They sell OEM rotor and I have had great luck with OEM, but also with Zimmermans (German brand). You can see a picture of the Zimmermans on my website: http://thehuangs.com/?s=brakes&x=0&y=0

As for the lip, here's a close up of the lip that had formed in my XC90 front rotors. It was probably 1-2 millimeters in depth. Amazing that they wear down like that.

Most AutoPart stores will turn the rotors for you, (if they aren't already to thin)
Something to look into, but they look a little thin to me. The lip seems fairly significant.
Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.
