Good evening all,
I am looking at a XC to buy that is going to need an ABS module. For the model year there are two possible units depending on the Chassis number. Having never owned a XC, does anyone have knowledge of where it would be located on the car. I was guessing drivers side door post, but is it an obvious number? It's a $500US difference in modules so I want to be forewarned of the cost.

Slow down
Up to model year 2001 these can be repaired for 60 bucks
If it's an 02 and newer they usually don't fail
The chassis code is on the VIN plate top of the inside left fender, the bottom row of numbers

It's an '03. I am not positive on the failure yet. All I know is that the ABS light is on and I haven't seen the car yet. I'm not sure if it's a speed sensor or the module. When I go to pick it up I'm just trying to think of the worst case scenario.
My background is with the 850 and the resoldering fix. I'm sure you are aware of it's ABS issues. Is there anything you would caution about on the XC ABS?

Not a common failure
I believe XeMODex rebuilds later ABS modules if you find out that IS the issue
You need to check the wheel sensors first on that year

The more common failure on 2002 and later is the pedal position sensor on brake booster. It is a potentiometer (the things that fail on ETM's, climate damper motors, and fuel tank gauge senders) and they wear out. Not labor intensive at all and I believe the part is in the $70 range. Only DTC readout will tell. Not all have the PPS, DSTC equipped have it.
