Flame Trap Box

Post by dduck13 »

I just got home from the dealer about my 2002 S60...I was told that I needed a new flame trap box (along with other things) but i can not seem to find anything about this on the internet. Any help would be great. I think the dealer is trying to rip me off. Thanks

Breather box/PCV system, not flame trap box for starters.
What do you want to know.
It's inside the engine, you need to remove the intake manifold to get at it and also replace all of the related hoses, elbows and clamps

If you replace every part in the PCV system the parts alone (retail) are at least $250

Look at this link it will show you what parts are replaced when repairing a PCV system. As JRL mentionned the cost of Volvo parts over the counter are fairly high but you have these replacement kit where you can save.

Also you can consult this tutorial explaining the principles behind and what is involved in replacing it.

You should not neglect it because high crankcase pressure will lead to more repairs in the future.

Careful with aftermarket kits
The 4" elbow is not up to snuff and has broken on many cars quite fast

I'm searching the site to find out why my elbow hose has failed since being replaced last year. My car ended up dumping out oil. I discovered that it was this hose. At first I tightened the clamp, but I think I just made it worse and tore the hose. A replacement hose is costing me a whopping $54.00! WTF
I'm questioning myself if I made a mistake when I installed the hose. Did I foget to tighten it? Or maybe I have so much pressure that it blew itself off?
Any suggestions?

I don't know what you're referring to, nothing (no part) cost 50 bucks except the large hose.
Were these Volvo parts or aftermarket
If Volvo parts and you replaced EVERYTHING, you did something wrong, it should not have gone bad

I rather that I did something wrong rather than something else is wrong. As for the part, I check with three on line vendors and they are all in the same ball park. If my engine serial number wasn't what it is then the hose would be only 9 bucks!
