ball joint came off while driving, haft sahft damage

While driving this afternoon home from work I suddenly lost control of the car, no steering, and no brakes. I felt a loud hit in the front end and the car dropped and skidded to a stop, very scary moment. The right front wheel fold itself at a right angle against the fender. The ball joint is gone and the haft shaft is in two pieces. The haft shaft separated itselft where the dust cover face the transmission and the rest of the haft shaft stayed connected to the transmission. There is no other visible damage. See the photo. Finally, the question is, can I put the haft shaft back by reattaching the dust cover and replace the ball joint and will this be a safe alternative. Haft shafts are only 20k miles old.

Inspect it all for damage before repacking with grease and reassembly. If you are not familiar with the inner workings then replace or have a professional inspect it for you.
