Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
I have a 95 850 Turbo wagon. I have owned the car since the summer and just now noticed the problem. When the temperature in cool (below say 50), when I really get in the gas the boost gauge peeks out and the motor starts to cut out. Has anybody had this problem?
Thanks,
Kevin
Boost gauge peaks out? How high does it get? If it's getting too high, you probably have a torn wastegate solenoid hose and the increased boost is blowing the spark out. If it's not going too high (past 2/3 or so), it's most likely just spark blowout... meaning you need an ignition system tune up. Remember, these cars love cheap copper plugs. Anything fancy will mess things up.
Sean,
Thanks for the reply. The gauge tops out all the way to the right. But this only happens in cool weather, not when outside temp is above 55-60 deg.
That sounds like fuel cut since you said the boost gauge is going all the way to the end of the bar. The fuel maps in the ECU are only programmed up to 1 bar of boost pressure and if that point is passed, the ECU will cut fuel. Check over all of the hoses attached to the BCS (the little thing attached to the airbox w/ 3 vacuum lines running into it and an electrical connection on the other end). Any holes could be partly the cause of the problem. If they all look fine, you may need to adjust the wastegate... which I think there are a few links around the net on how to do. I'll see if I I can find one of them later... gotta jet now though .
