Alarm went off, now car will not start!!

Post by jenzshoppin »

Hi! I am new to this forum and I just bought another Volvo. I have a 2004 S60 2.4T. :o This morning we heard an electronic sound with the tone going high/low over and over. We checked our daughter's electronic toys, our electronic toys and nothing was making that sound. Finally, my husband says, "is your car alarm going off?". I open the door and my Volvo is making the sound, really loud on a Sunday morning!! I was desperate to turn it off as I was in fear of my neighbors waking up and smashing my new pretty car with a bat!
Well, I ran inside to get the key fob to turn off the alarm. I got the key fob, went to the door and pressed the yellow button...nothing. Red button, alarm chirped while going off. I went out to the car and pressed the lock, unlock and the yellow and the alarm stopped....for about 2 second and started again. (I didn't realize that the alarm had been sounding then it would stop for 2 seconds then sound again). I gave the keyfob to my husband and told him to try while I got help. I looked on the internet and could not find anything that would make the alarm stop. I did find the Volvo on call number. I don't even know if the car is under warranty, but I called them. The operator told me to try locking/unlocking the car 5 times then get in and start it. My husband tried this and when he would turn the key, the alarm would go off again. He did this about 5 separate times and just left the key in the ignition the last time to just make the car stop sounding off the alarm!! :x
It turns out my car is under warranty at 44,000 some odd miles. Volvo on call operator called a tow truck to tow my car 20 miles away to the closest dealer. The dealership is closed on Sunday so I will be without my Volvo for my commute to work tomorrow. I am kind of bummed because I will have to drive my husband's '03 Chevy Tahoe that we are selling. It is a real gas hog and is heavy so braking takes longer!! I will have to drive slower in the freeway traffic so I don't slam into anyone!!
Anyone had alarm trouble like this?? I do not have a manual either so I could not look up the problem.
Thanks, jennifer

How many forums are there?? :P

All of that drama and the problem was only a dead battery! Why does the alarm go off when there is a dead battery?

I said it was a dead battery in the other forum! and also said why it activates the alarm! but you seemed to have missed all that!

Alarm has it's own backup battery.
Alarm amougst other things senses current, and checks for circuit tampering. If the battery is depleted then the alarm will sound.
