Speedo stopped working after ABS Module work

Post by trsfa »

97 850: Started to pull ABS for repairs, but ran out of time. Reinserted plugs, with some difficulty. Speedo now dead. Also, the day before, I had pulled the SRS in steering wheel to repair horn. Speedo was working at that point. I plan on having the car scanned, to reset the SRS light. Will this locate the speedo problem?

It is my understanding that the ABS has the speedo signals going through it. You probably have a connection issue.

Yes indeed; when the ABS unit is unplugged the speedometer, odometer and cruise will not work. There's two possabilities. First the ABS unit may have been cracked and failed when you unplugged it. Pretty much 100% of the ABS units will fail during the life of the car and sometimes the failure will also show up as a broken speedometer. Best bet on that is to send it to Victor Rocha and get it rebuilt. The second possability is that you didn't get the plug seated back correctly. The plug is a tricky little thing. When you're putting it back in you need to partially close the release handle so the alignment holes in the plug will open up. You can then insert it into the plug on the ABS unit and it will settle in nicely and draw right down tight when you close the latching lever.

Thanks, actually is was in the process of pulling the ABS in order to send it to Mr. Rocha. I'll try it again once I have time. BTW, after pulling the ABS for repairs, will the speedo, etc be dead until the module is reinstalled?

Yes, the speedometer, odometer, cruise and ABS functions will be dead until you get the ABS unit reinstalled. Make sure you have the E5 torx socket before you try and remove the unit. If you try it with something else and round off the Torx heads you are screwed.

I having some trouble getting the big ABS plug off now. The hinged cover is free, but the plug won't come off. Is there a trick?

The problem was that the little discs on the sides of the cover that move the alignment pieces are gone. Once I slid them over by hand, the plug came loose. When I reassemble later, I'll secure the cover with a zip tie or something.

Thanks for all the help, I bought this car three days ago for my son.
