Windshield wiper skipping

Post by jimmyboy »

Hey all,

I've noticed recently that when I leave my wipers on for a while, the right one will begin to "skip" a bit - sort of like old wiper blades do, but it's the arm. It kind of jerks as it's going down, and it's actually really annoying to me.

The wiper blades are fine - the arm just jerks as it comes down. If I flip it to high speed and then back again, sometimes it will stop and sometimes it won't.

Is the motor dead or is there any way to fix it?

As always, thanks!

Have you tried tightening the nut to make sure it's not coming loose? I had one do that in a storm once on the driver's side; had to pull over until it stopped raining.

Yeah, the nut is tight.

My wipers died entirely on my old 740 in a torrential downpour. :D

Any other ideas? Salvage motor perhaps?

Or just try bending the arm a bit for a tighter contact to the windshield
Not too much just a little

Skipping as in lifting off the glass or shuddering in one direction?

If the problem is shuddering in one direction:
Wiper arms sometimes get twisted and the wiper arm end is not square with windshield surface. This makes the wiper have an angle to glass and the wiper blade can't flip to the side when it reverses directions. Stop wipers in mid sweep by turning off key when wipers are on. Pick up wiper arm and set it back down gently and look and see if the wiper sit straight up on glass or does it lean to one side or the other. Adjust with a small adjustable wrench closed down on the arm to twist it to where wiper stands squarely on glass.
