Keep '01 V70 or buy '02 XC70?
Keep '01 V70 or buy '02 XC70?
that is my quandry...'01 coming up on warranty...current trouble is is the engine revs a bit when inappropriate--rpm's kind of go wild but car continues to drive ok...dealer states it could need a software upgrade...any thoughts on this? though the revving is more of an annoyance than anything else, I worry that it could be killing my transmission..with the warranty about to expire, I'm considering dumping it. thanks in advance for any input.
Screw the software, get dealer to replace the ETM as Volvo now does under warranty for 10 years, 200K. Buying an '02 XC sounds like a lateral move at best.

I don't know where you live, but 'TSR' is not a model designation that I'm aware of in North America although I would hazard to guess that the 'T' means you have a turbo. Regardless, the ETM was a piece of Italian engineering that infests all models from 1999 onwards. The design changed in 2002 to a SLIGHTLY more reliable product (I think they switched to a German supplier), but it's still a matter of when it will fail, not if. We're all a little leary of this new "software update" as the suspision is that all it does is mask a pending failure perhaps getting the car past the extended warranty period. The problem is purely mechanical & they know that. Check out the ETM link on this page & arm yourself before heading back to the dealer.

thanks again for your input. fyi: SR portion stands for sunroof--figured that one out from checking out CPO cars on volvo website...duh!......assuming you are correct and T is indeed turbo but not confirmed.... checked out etm info...so if i take it in for the etm, volvo is going to run new etm software, which may fix it or may mask it? great....

This same question was on another forum. The software update in question is just the software that is needed to enable the replaced ETM. Evidently there is no such "new" software. This means that even if the ETM is replaced, there is a good chance of it going again before too long. Since Volvo is warrantying this for 10 years or 200K miles, I would trade for a more reliable car before these limits unless the ETM and software download become progressively cheaper in the future.
