Re: Hideous vibration after renewing engine mounts

Mounts might be a red herring. The vibration seems almost entirely to be transmitted via the steering rack as after some investigative driving, I can't feel any through my feet but the steering wheel buzzes a LOT. Should I be checking the rack attachment bolts? I think there are 5 but where exactly are they and are they tough to get to?

Marcobrick, I have also been thru the motor mount and vibration nonsense. I was insistent on figuring out why my wife's 2000 S70 nonturbo vibrated at idle. I had both the lower hydraulic mounts changed after I changed the one by the crank, top and torque strap. I bought non-Volvo mounts from IPD. Big, big mistake. The vibration was much much worse and I regretted ever having gone down this path. I finally purchased one Volvo brand and one Hutchinson brand (I believe they are OES) for the two hydraulic mounts and that solved the problem other than inherently more vibration from a 5 cylinder engine as opposed to my smooth inline 6 in my BMW. So, if you by any chance used after market mounts, you may want to replace. I have also seen JRL mention that several times in my internet searches. The rear hydraulic mount for my vehicle also comes with a metal washer looking thing that sits on top of the mount. I suspect that Volvo learned that this rear mount needed more height. Perhaps you need that thing???

Thanks for the reply. This is now someone else's problem as the car is now sold! I have purchased a 98 V70T5 7-seater. I will be much the wiser when it comes to buying parts for this one.

URO crank mounts transmit far more vibration than stock; readers beware.

If the old mount is still usable, i'd suggest putting it back in, often times over 10 or so years, of constant back lash the engine will push and pull on that joint, bending it a little, the new mount, would have made it stiffer, and would cause the vibrations to go throughout the metal cage of the car
Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

The rubber in the old mount was broken clean in half. Yes, I did sin and fit a URO crank mount. The only place the vibration manifests itself is through the steering wheel. It is not nearly as bad now as it was when I first changed the mounts. The new owner picks it up tomorrow and as soon as he is gone I am going to get my new (old) V70.
