I'm an Aussie recent purchaser of a Volvo 850. It is certainly a big improvement over my aging 1987 Nissan Pulsar.
I guess my main concern now is feeling comfortable about drinving round in a totally different car.
I've heard the anti-Volvo thing is much more cutting and aggressive in Australia than other countries.
But I also remember reading on the internet that Volvo's image is improving.
What do others think?
I am especially interested in Australians opinions about how others react to them owning a Volvo.
Do people often give Volvo drivers a hard time because of the car they drive these days.
I was thinking nowadays maybe SUVs have taken over Volvo as the main targets of derogatory remarks from others.
I guess I'm more concerned about the anti-Volvo thing than other people because I lack confidence and am therefore more often picked on by others. I am also conscious that although I have not had any accidents in 18 years of driving I am not good at parking and won't do certain types of driving (eg driving at night to inner city areas) since I don't feel comfortable with it and have restricted vision (almost totally blind in one eye).
But I'm looking forward to involvement with friendly other Volvo drivers in the Volvo club.
I welcome comments from other forum participants on this topic.
bloody Volvo drivers!
ha ha ha
im 18 years old also australian.. i got my first car about a month ago
my 1989 volvo 240gl automatic sedan
its funny too see everyone staring at you.. but i think the old volvo is a beast!
i have recently bought an old man style hat especially for the rear parcel tray (back window) just to get a few laughs, and i have bought a couple of small australian flags that i plan to attach to the bonnet(remembering to remove them after ever stop...bastard deviate vandalisers!)
i guess volvos are an aquired taste
peace out

My friend in Sydney says that the Volvo drivers there get a bad rap because they drive too bloody slow...Thats the only reason... She also stated that they do wear old man hats too. Thats funny...
At any rate mod the heck out of your Volvos and make sleepers out of them. Keep up with the pack and stay out of every ones way or pass the blagarts. That could change the way Aussies see us Volvo drivers...
I was going to move to Sydney last summer and yes.. bring my 850T5 With...( I have been known to achieve 220kmh in mine )
Show them blokes what Volvos are all about!
