How do I read the error codes

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Many postings refer to the error codes. I have a problem with my S80 not shifting into overdive also some of the lower gears do not change when they should when the engines is hot.

I have been told that it could be the 'B' Solonoid but also told that the software needs to be updated ($300.00!!) first to get accurate error code read-outs.
