2000 s80 surging at idle - not ETM? MAF?

2000 s80 surging at idle - dealer says no code for ETM
recommends fix for problem is replacing Mass Airflow Sensor for $400
I think they are wrong.

My research does not link the surging to the Mass Airflow Sensor - it always seems to link to the ETM problem

Does anyone want to weigh in on this???

Tom do you have a code reader? If so check the codes yourself. I would not be without one in my car.
I also believe that you can unplug the MAF as a diagnostic aid and the car should run, albeit a bit rich, but without surging if it's the problem.

My 2000 S80 would surge up and down almost stalling when I stop.. I had the ETM clean by a independant mechanic that only works on Volvos but is not a dealer. After he cleaned it, the surging stopped and it has never run better. Of course he said this is only a temporary fix for all of the current design ETM's WILL fail. Get a second opinion or complain enough to the dealer that they have no choice but to clean your ETM or replace it. I've even heard of people emailing Volvo direct and getting results that way. Good luck and keep us informed.

UPDATE:

I unplugged the MAF and the engine continued to surge. Mind you, I only have 69k on the car, and the engine bay is cleaner than some interiors I've seen.

I bought a new MAF, and installed it, (not hard to do). GUESS WHAT - It STILL surges.

So it is the ETM after all, and the dealer won't replace it without a "Hard Code" from the ETM.....

This has now truly pi"""d me off....

well, I went to another dealer who claims to get a lot of business from the dealer in my town... The surging got to be bad to the point of stalling instead of idling, at intersections, in intersections, etc. So, I got it to the other dealer, and they want me to pay for all diagnostic work/fault tracing that may or may not take them to the ETM. I.E, if codes indicate MAF, replace MAF @ $400... if that dont work, and next code is O2 sensor, repl. o2 sensor @$300... if that dont work and next code, etc. etc. $$$$ then, if we get an ETM code, they'll replace THAT for free...... I just hope the code for the ETM shows up now, before all that.... This time the "Emission System Service Required" and "Check Engine" light came on and remain on. Also, in order to drive, I had to rev the engine past 2k rpm and drop it into gear, slamming the tranny many times.... so if that goes next because of that mistreatment, it seem that Volvo should be liable.

So is this right for them to charge me for all the "diagnostic" work (esentially paying for parts and labor that really don't have to be done because of the ETM)???? I'll find out what they come up with and post it...

Well, they informed me that all fault codes are indicating that the PCV is clogged. They are cleaning the system and replacing it. slated to pu the car this weekend. Advisor commented that all other systems, ETM, 02 sens., etc. were all within normal parameters, and this should be the fix. We'll see...... to be continued I'm sure.
