Car seems to run for about 5 minutes then check engine light comes on and then the up arrow light. I retrieve codes from OBD and the results were 212, 521, indicatiing the front O2 sensor
I had recently replaced this sensor, it is less then a year old. Now when the up arrow comes on the system goes in limp mode and engine cuts off and will not start until the 223 code that I got from port A1 has been cleared. I had cleared all codes and was able to start car and run for few minutes and the cycle repeats it's self. I looked up this code and it points to the IAC valve. Will a defective IAC valve cause a no start? Is there somethig esle going on? Roger Just had a engine put in recently though

What code do you get from port A1?
If that 223 is from port A1, that indicates a bad throttle position sensor. Your flashing arrow is in NO WAY related to the IAC valve.

The code that I got from port A1 was 223. I had clear all the codes in the system and this was the only code that came up. I went out again to try and start but no luck. The flashing arrow still flashes with no start. As soon as Iput it in thr run position it flashes.

Sounds like you need to replace the throttle position sensor on the front of the throttle body. A common failure item, and it can cause a no-start issue and transmission issues as well since it relies on that to determine when to shift.

Thank you for the valuable info and the link to the site. My Haynes manual was dead wrong. I need to get a decent OBD2 testor. Any model or brand you recommend?

I have a cheapo Actron unit I got for $40. I had a nicer one, but it wouldn't really do much else with a Volvo except read engine codes.
You are lucky with having OBDI and OBDII on your car. OBDI will tell you almost everything that's wrong with it, while a good OBDII scanner may tell you sensor values from the O2 and MAF values.

Thank you!!!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!!!!! Problem has been fixed. It was a fulty TPS sensor. As soon as I installed the sensor the car started and the check engine light came on again. I had to clear all of the codes in the entire system starting with port A1 and then port A2. The car is running and sounding a lot better. Thanks again, you guys know your stuff. I had just got the car back form having a engine put in so I did not know what to expect. I paid $50 for the part and installed fairly easy. Thanks again. Roger Baltimore MD
